Elizabeth Edwards – and, for the first time, daughter Cate – are opening up about John Edwards’s infidelity and the breakup of the marriage.

In PEOPLE’s edition next week, Cate, 28, who lives in Washington and clerks for a federal judge, and her mother talk candidly about their relationships with John now, Elizabeth’s cancer and other issues.

“There are the things she taught without words,” Cate writes about her mother in a bonus essay for PEOPLE. Like, “how to continue to live your life on your own terms when it somehow becomes savaged by people you never invited into it.”

PEOPLE’s extensive interview was Elizabeth’s first in more than a year and her first public comments since several tell-all books and interviews about the former presidential candidate’s affair called Elizabeth’s own character into question earlier this year.

“It’s my story and I’m writing it from here on out – nobody else,” Elizabeth says in the interview as the paperback edition of her bestselling book Resilience, is released.

The paperback includes a new chapter reflecting on the worst of the fallout from husband John’s infidelity and on their split at the end of last year.

Landon Donovan may not be single after all: Though the soccer star quietly split from Rules of Engagement actress Bianca Kajlich two years ago, the couple’s marriage isn’t completely over just yet.

“We are not officially divorced,” Donovan, who gave the Rules of Engagement star a shout-out after scoring the game-winning goal during Wednesday’s World Cup match against Algeria, tells Yahoo! Sports.

In fact, not only did the LA Galaxy midfielder, 28, also blow Kajlich, 33, a kiss during a post-game interview, he spoke to her early Thursday morning in an emotional phone call. “It was nice,” he says about the conversation.

“It would surprise no one if Landon and Bianca were back together very soon,” says one of Kajlich’s friends. “They have remained in contact and are very close to one another.”

Adds the pal: “The fact that Landon wanted to share his special moment with her is very significant.”

Though Donovan acknowledges there were problems that caused the 2009 breakup, he says the separation was not bitter or acrimonious.

“Sometimes you learn more from those moments than anything,” he said during Team USA’s pre-World Cup training camp in Princeton. “For me, that was certainly the case. It doesn’t have to be something ugly or nasty. It can be helpful and you can grow from it. That is what we both took from it.”

Really putting a stamp on their split, Mel Gibson filed for a restraining order against Oksana Grigorieva, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his 7-month-old daughter, Lucia, PEOPLE has learned.

The Oscar winner, 54, and the Russian musician-singer, 40, had been together about a year by the time they broke up in April 2010.

While at the time of the split a friend of the couple told PEOPLE, “They’re still friends and they’ll both raise Lucia together,” since then their relationship has become less amicable.

Though the legal documents, which were filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, are sealed, RadarOnline, which first broke the story, reports that the main issue involves Gibson’s access to the child.

Gibson, who just completed filming How I Spent My Summer Vacation, resides in Malibu. Grigorieva, meanwhile, is still living in a Sherman Oaks, Calif., home owned by Gibson – and has been doing so since their split.

She was reportedly served the legal papers there.

Gibson’s rep has no comment.

In April 2009, Robyn Moore, the actor-filmmaker’s wife of 30 years, filed for divorce from Gibson, citing irreconcilable differences. Later that same month, he and Grigorieva made their first public appearance together as a couple.

In addition to Lucia, Gibson is the father of seven children – six sons and one daughter – while Grigorieva has a son, Alexander, with her former boyfriend, British actor (and short-term James Bond star) Timothy Dalton.

The prince arrived by helicopter just after 1:30 p.m. and kicked off his three-day trip to the Big Apple with some live-fire exercises on the artillery range.

Trading his baby blue beret for a helmet, Harry and a team of West Point cadets fired M-4 assault rifles at pop-up silhouette targets from 15 to 300 meters away. Harry’s experience serving on the frontlines in Afghanistan as an air controller for 10 weeks in 2008 – a media leak forced him to head home – has helped him hone his shot.

“He clearly knows what he’s doing,” said Col. Casey Haskins, who indicated that Harry hit multiple “enemy” targets, successfully avoiding all the “friendly” ones. “He clearly knows how to shoot. He clearly knows how to move.”

After practicing for more than 10 minutes, the redheaded royal, who is third in line for the British throne, took off his helmet and stuck out his tongue, hamming it up in the summer heat. He then followed a combat exercise in the woods, but didn’t participate. Later, while posing for photos with cadets, Harry was asked to prop his weapon up higher and responded, “Are you serious?” Kidding, he quickly obliged.

But this weekend, Harry is doing more than practicing his shot. He’s focusing on helping veterans, playing a little polo and raising money for the U.S. arm of his charity, American Friends of Sentebale, which he co-founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, Africa in honor of their mothers. The charity gives money to needy children in Lesotho and helps combat the AIDS crisis.

This is a return trip to New York for Harry, having taken a two-day tour last year where he similarly participated in the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic.

It was a day to remember for actress Mena Suvari and concert producer Simone Sestito, who were married Saturday in a private church in Vatican City, Italy, PEOPLE has confirmed.

“The ceremony was truly unique and Mena looked breathtaking,” says a guest. “They are very much in love.”

The two, who have been engaged since 2008, planned a private reception following their ceremony outside of the city.

Suvari, 31, and Sestito, 25, met at the Toronto Film Festival in 2007. The couple chose Rome as their wedding locale because most of Sestito’s family lives near the city.

“We just understood each other,” Sestito told PEOPLE in 2008. “She’s very caring and understanding. There was a connection.”

Suvari will next be seen in the comedy, You May Not Kiss The Bride, costarring Dave Annable.

Talk about stamina: After Isner spent a record-breaking 11-plus hours over a span of three days slugging it out against Nicolas Mahut of France on Court 18 at Wimbledon, he won the match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68.

The athletes picked up play Thursday, after leaving the court tied 59-59 in the fifth set after the match was suspended Wednesday due to darkness.

So how did Isner feel going into day three of his epic first-round match – sore, sleep-deprived, exhausted?

None of the above: The tennis star Tweeted he “feels like a million bucks!!!” just hours before heading back out on court Thursday.

Isner’s match is now the record books as the longest match in the history of tennis – not bad for leaving a lasting impression on Wimbledon and tennis fans.

After giving birth to son Hank Baskett IV last December, reality star Kendra Wilkinson went from a toned and taut size two up a few sizes into uncharted territory. “My curves shocked me big-time,” admits the E! star. “It was a whole other woman I was looking at in the mirror.” While Kendra isenjoying her new “different” body, she’s looking forward to getting that tone back. “About two months ago, I stopped making excuses. It’s time to get out there and really bust my ass like I used to,” she says of her now hour-long workouts at the gym and new healthier eating habits, which include salads, grilled chicken and chewing gum to curb cravings. “I was so used to being fit and skinny,” she says. “I never had to lose weight until now. I want my muscle back–I don’t want anything jiggling. Cardio for me is number one. I need the cardio because I can tone my body, but I gotta burn the fat off!” One step in the right direction? “We didn’t have my stripper pole in my house ever since I gave birth, now we’re going hang it up. I feel sexy again.”

After her split from football star Reggie Bush earlier this year, Kim Kardashian was in no rush to find love again as she focused on her career. Then love found her.

After briefly being linked to Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, Kardashian is going out with another football player, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin.

“They met at a restaurant in L.A. a few months ago and exchanged numbers and have been talking ever since,” says a source of the couple. “They’ve had a few dates and it’s going really well.”

While the pair are officially dating, “he’s not quite her boyfriend,” the source says. “They’re taking it slow. She thinks he’s a really good guy. He’s really sweet to her. … He thinks Kim is his dream girl.”

Before Kardashian, 29, met Austin, she had been trying to live the single life, but the source says, “They just really connected.”

Olympic champ Scott Hamilton underwent brain surgery Wednesday to remove the recurrence of a benign tumor near his pituitary gland, which first appeared in 2004.

“They’re happy with the progress of the entry process, and now can begin to get rid of the tumor,” the figure skater’s rep, Michelle Thornbury, tells PEOPLE of the procedure, which was completed late Wednesday.

Hamilton, 51, had the surgery in Boston, where he is surrounded by family, including his wife Tracie, their friends and his brother Steve. “They’re all feeling the love coming from all of us,” the rep says.

After the surgery was complete, Hamilton’s rep told PEOPLE, “Scott is resting comfortably and expected to make a full recovery. He and his family are so thankful to the doctors and surgical team for taking such good care of him and grateful to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”

He will remain in ICU for a couple days and is expected to return home next week.
In 2004, Hamilton first discovered he had the tumor, called craniopharyngioma. Although benign, if left untreated it could have caused him to go blind. He chose to treat it with Gamma Knife, a procedure that bombards the tumor with high, pinpoint doses of gamma radiation. At the time, doctors were able to virtually destroy the tumor.

After that procedure, Hamilton, who also underwent chemotherapy for testicular cancer in 1997, was upbeat about his life with son Aidan, now 6, and his wife, Tracie. (The athlete and his wife have another son, Maxx, born in 2008.)

“You think you love your life, but you’re just scratching the surface,” he told PEOPLE. “Now I look at my son and I realize I may not be able to spend much time with him. So my level of appreciation for what I’ve got now has gone to a whole other level.”

Are Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough a match made in reality TV heaven?

“Things have gotten more serious over the last month,” a source tells PEOPLE. “They’re perfect for each other.”

The American Idol host and the former Dancing With the Stars pro have tried to keep things quiet, but In recent weeks, they’ve been spotted getting cozy all over Los Angeles.

On June 13, the couple walked on the beach in Malibu with their arms around each other. Three days later, they dined at intimate new L.A. hotspot Red O restaurant, where a diner says Seacrest, 35, “was very attentive.” And Sunday, Hough, 21, accompanied the American Idol host on another outing in Malibu, where the two shopped at Alice + Olivia.

Hough, who split from country star Chuck Wicks last year, was also linked with comedian Dane Cook in March.
